Too many business
writers agree with Gene Fowler:
"Writing
is easy. All you do is stare at a blank
sheet of paper until drops of blood form
on your forehead."
But trying to
produce a masterpiece is actually counterproductive.
An efficient business writer is not trying
to win a Pulitzer, but to get the job
done.
That's why Beauty
is only skin-deep is more effective
than Pulchritude
reposes within the optic parameters of
the perceiver. The wordy version shows off the
writer's vocabulary; the simple sentence
communicates.
Good business
writing can be produced without sweating
blood. For example, should you try to
catch every error as you write? Russell (2005)
found that those "who try to catch
every mistake as they draft can give
themselves writer's block."
While there
is no one-size-fits-all formula for writing,
understanding the writing
process can
make writing easier and more efficient.
